  • November 5, 2009, I was part of a panel presentation at the Chicago chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI). Took place at the Rosewood in Rosemont, IL.
  • October 12, 2009, I was part of a panel presentation for the Human Resources Management Association of Chicago (HRMAC). We discussed legal issues concerning setting up a business in Illinois, & how people in transition must consider these issues when thinking about setting up their own business, instead of looking for “salaried” work. Thanks to Steve Callisher, Vice President of The Mentor Group Inc., & member of the HRMAC HR Transition Group planning committee & the Board of Directors for a chapter of SHRM (CHRA), for inviting us to present. This took place at United Airlines’ Reservation Center in Des Plaines, IL.
  • September 24, 2009, I presented the University of Illinois’ “Finding Talent” program for employers & recruiters. My presentation concerned legal issues surrounding background checking, electronic communication & social networking in recruiting & selection. This was sponsored by the Alumni Career Center at the University of Illinois Alumni Association.   • July 22, 2009, I presented a labor & employment law seminar at Chicago’s City Hall. Thanks to the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs for setting this up. This was my 6th presentation for them.
  • May 2, 2009, presentation to a group of about 40 clients of Chicago’s Woodlawn Community Service Corporation’s annual “Law Day” at Chicago’s Bessie Coleman Public Library, 731 E. 63rd Street.
  • March 4, 2009, presentation for the World Trade Center Illinois‘ Doing Business With Latin America seminar at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.   • February 24, 2009, Joshua Betancourt with UBS Financial Services sponsored a business law seminar centered on business asset protection. This included protecting intellectual property from competitors & current & former employees, employment agreements including non-competes, non-disclosures, severance, hiring & separation. Boris Umansky of national IP law firm Leydig, Voit & Mayer, presented on intellectual property, copyright, patent & trademark law. Joshua focused on business financial asset protection strategies, and I handled employment agreements & employment law.
  • February 20, 2009, I gave my 5th seminar for the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs & Licensing. Like my other seminars this was Q & A focused. Attendees received a 20-page handout summarizing 55+ federal, state and local labor & employment laws, & examining a variety of human resources related legal issues. This handout is available here.
  • October 27, 2008, and November 10, 2008 business law seminars “Legal Assistance for Entrepreneurs” and “Small Businesses and Human Resources” seminars; I presented with attorney Elliot Richardson of Horwitz, Richardson and Baker, at Orly’s Cafe in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. These presentations were sponsored by Foreign Exchange Services of Illinois, Inc. as part of their Green Tech Experience forums.
  • June 20, 2008, my 4th seminar for the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs and Licensing. Like my prior seminars for them, it focused on labor and employment law for small and medium-sized businesses (2-1,000 employees). My presentation’s PowerPoint is here.
  • February 27, 2008, 2 hour training session for a Chicago-based nonprofit. The training concerned progressive discipline and discharge. As typical with most of my training sessions, Q & A and role playing were emphasized. The session was conducted for middle and senior managers with supervisory responsibilities. The training also included a handout which I’ve posted on this site as a PDF. You can access the 10 page handout here/link. In order to maintain confidentiality, I removed the business’ name and all identifying references to the business.
  • January 12, 2008, I presented at the Ground Floor Entrepreneur Center’s 2008 business development seminar. I was part of the “Staffing for Success” panel focusing on the legal issues established businesses must consider relative to selecting, screening/verifying and hiring employees. Other sessions centered on various development, marketing and finance issues encountered by established businesses.
